Civics is has become an important idea for me in correlation with the ideas I have about being a universal person. One day I happened upon some juvenile non-fiction about becoming an American citizen and the process of it all. I soon realized that what qualifies a person becoming a citizen of America, for those just coming in, is the knowing how to speak English and knowing our history and government. Those who are born here of course are automatically considered a citizen, but I can bet that many natural born citizens would never be able to pass a citizenship test. In fact I would have to admit myself, even with all the studies I have had in American history and government through elementary school, high school and college, much of that knowledge was placed in my short term memory. I'm not proud of this.
It is not just the ideas of knowing the history of America and its government that makes this a concerning point. I am concerned of no ones care of America. Does anyone understand the American experience, the struggles of so many people till this point? Does anyone remember the American Dream like those who are trying so hard to immigrate to this country? Is the American Dream a false rumor that still blows through the airs of other nations, enticing other people that here is where you will have a better life? How many people still strive for it or ponder it? America is our home and our mother and as many of us know there are programs out there that take care of us. Probably not as much as we would like, but we should also understand as children of our country we must also take care of our home. Our mother country will not do everything for us. We have our own responsibilities that we must learn to except to our "Big Mama" our earth and our relationship with America's sister and brother nations. Otherwise what do you think will eventually become of us?
